Curry Tofu Scramble and Das Lakshan, Jain Festival of 10 Dharmas
This week is Das Lakshan, a 10-day Jain festival honoring 10 dharmas, or virtues. Jainism is one of the world’s oldest religions with strong values tied to principles of non-violence (ahimsa) and non-attachment. Each day of Das Lakshan represents a different virtue to embed and practice. The 10 virtues include forgiveness, humility, contentment, truthfulness, control of senses, austerity, renunciation, non-attachment, chastity, and straightforwardness.
During these ten days, Jains give up leafy greens, root vegetables including garlic and onion, as well as any other animal-related products such as eggs, dairy, and honey. In addition, Jains practice tuning inward for greater self-reflection of habits, routines, and actions. These 10 days are meant for self-purification and uplifting of the soul. On the last day of Das Lakshan focuses on forgiveness with the phrase, Michhami Dukkadam, which translates to “If I have hurt you, knowingly or unknowingly, through my thoughts, words, or actions, I humbly ask for your forgiveness.”
This was only a brief synopsis of Das Lakshan, and there is additional history, and rituals Jain practice during this holy time. It brings me joy I get to share this festival with each of you!
